Hearts of Joy: Kanani's Story
Hearts of Joy International is a non-profit that provides life saving heart surgery to individuals with Down syndrome. 50% of children born with Down Syndrome will have a congenital heart defect that requires surgery to repair or it becomes fatal. Due to poverty, lack of resources in developing worlds and stigma, children with Down syndrome are not prioritized in the global healthcare systems or given access to proper medical care. Hearts of Joy International celebrates the lives of those with Down syndrome as a gift, not a burden. They are dedicated to walking alongside families through the surgery process, providing resources, support and education to communities, orphanages, caregivers and parents on the inherent dignity and value of the child. Hearts of Joy International serves in the Philippines, India, Mexico, Uganda and the United States. Here is the powerful story of Kanani's journey to heart surgery, from Uganda to India, the challenges and triumphs of a heart warrior and his family.
